African
art Until the nineteenth century African art was unknown outside its own continent. African sculptures were considered to be superstitious curiosities and in the beginning were not even considered sophisticated enough to be called art. Europeans began collecting African sculptures in the late 19th century, but it was first when artists like Picasso, Matisse, Nolde, Brancusi, Giacometti, Moore and others began their collecting of the African sculpture that the world understood it really was sophisticated art. The influence of African sculpture on Western art has been immeasurable. Our objects: |
